Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are the latest celebrity couple to find out the hard way that divorce often ends in a long, acrimonious and expensive court battle. But many costly annulments could be avoided if alternative and less hostile means of separation were explored first, new research suggests. Sir Paul says his experience of seeking a divorce - which has included mediation - is like “going through hell”. In an interview with Radio Times, published today, the former Beatle, 65, adds: “As Winston Churchill once said, If you are going through hell, keep going! The only solution is to remain dignified. If I dont keep a silence about it, I lose this idea of being dignified.” The NAOs research implies that solicitors are costing the public purse up to 10m a year by putting profits before their clients interests. Under the legal aid system, solicitors can expect to be paid much more in fees if their case is settled in court. In a third of cases examined by the NAO, lawyers had failed even to suggest that a client seeking a divorce or separation should first consider mediation as alternative to court. The Legal Services Commission (LSC), which authorises legal aid payments, spends about 300m a year helping those who qualify for state funding to deal with a family breakdown.

Dental surgeries, prisons and airports have one thing in common: people want to leave them as fast as possible. Jails and air terminals share a second characteristic: nobody wants one in their backyard. But this weekend two million Britons are flocking to underplanned and overcrowded airports in the first stage of their annual trek to a place in the sun. When the worlds first integrated airport was created in 1936, the journey from the centre of London to the centre of Paris took less time than the 21st-century jet-age journey via Gatwick or Heathrow, or on Eurostar. The key to speedy, seamless travel was a revolutionary new airport terminal just north of the village of Crawley. The Beehive, as the terminal at Gatwick racecourse soon became known, was a circular building with direct underground access from a specially built station astride the London-to- Brighton main line. Travellers could catch the 12.30pm from London Victoria, be airborne an hour later, arrive at Le Bourget airport in Paris just after 3.30pm local time and reach the Arc de Triomphe comfortably within three hours of leaving London. The stylish, spacious Art Deco design of the Beehive, and innovations such as telescopic covered walkways to the aircraft, made it a model for the great airport buildings of the future. Luton airport need not apply for inclusion in that particular list, because even with a pounds 100m facelift its carpet-warehouse appearance remains the antithesis of grace and the epitome of brutish utilitarianism. Consequently, the Bedfordshire airport is also a pretty grim place in which to while away a six-hour delay, with only the chance of a rant in front of the Airline docu-soap cameras - filming the everyday story of no-frills folk - to break the boredom. During a wrangle over funding the “improvements”, an easyJet insider told me that the airport operator was “building the Taj Mahal at Luton”. If only.

Fair-Trade Coffee

Coffee futures moved back above $1 in July, up from lows of 95 cents in mid-June. Prices likely will fluctuate because of the Brazilian weather for the next two months. There have been 17 freeze events in Brazil over the past 42 years, but only three in the past 21 years. Odds are we could see a significant price spike over the next six weeks. Traditionally, speculators bid up coffee prices ahead of the Brazilian winter, which runs from June through August. Then, if no frost damage occurs, prices tend to collapse by late August. John T. The Mystical Guide To Home Inspection
As part of a project to educate homeowners on making their homes more energy-efficient, one Oklahoma City couple volunteered their house for a thorough inspection Wednesday to determine how much energy it was wasting and what they can do about it. Sustainable OKC, the local branch of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and Guaranteed Watt Saver worked out an arrangement where GWS will inspect four houses for free and present their findings at the groups sustainability conference in April. After about an hour-long inspection, Parker and Curtis Maxwell, GWSs Oklahoma operational manager, determined the 1,517-square- foot home wasnt in that bad of shape when it came to energy loss.

liposuction

Posted by on 12 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

Q Im a 30-year-old, somewhat active woman who is concerned my weight, so I try to exercise regularly. However, I cant seem to lose weight in my stomach area and in my thighs. Would I be a good candidate for liposuction, and what are the risks associated with this procedure? A According to researchers, liposuction is the nations most popular form of cosmetic surgery, resulting in about 400,000 procedures a year.
TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION Liposuction was first developed in the late 1970s to remove undersired fat from nearly all body areas, including the face, neck, chin, breast, abdomen, hips, flanks (love handles), inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees and ankles. Developed by dermatologic surgeons in the 1980s, a major advancement called the tumescent technique of liposuction completely revolutionized the procedure. The use of tumescent liposuction allows dermatologic surgeons to safely and effectively remove deep and superficial layers of fat under local anesthesia with relatively little discomfort, virtually no complications and improved cosmetic results. Liposuction is the removal of excess fat with a small, straw-like instrument called a cannula that is attached to a suction machine. The fat layer under the skin is converted to a network of tunnels, and the cannula is manipulated within the layers to remove unwanted fatty deposits. An elastic garment is then worn for compression and healing. The result is a resculpting of bulging areas into more attractive contours.
If no amount of diet or exercise removes those stubborn saddlebags on your hips, or that paunchy spot on your stomach, you may be able to get rid of that localized area of fat through surgery. Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that vacuums out fat from beneath the skins surface to reduce fullness in areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Although liposuction can produce permanent changes in body contour, it is not a substitute for a healthy low-fat diet and exercise. It will not tighten up loose skin, nor will it eliminate the shallow surface fat irregularities called cellulite. It is a sculpting technique that can improve body proportions, and help make clothing fit better. Liposuction recontours the body by removing some of the bodys finite number of fat cells. Its a myth that when you gain weight, youre adding new fat cells to your body. In fact, each person has a fixed number of fat cells. When you gain weight, those fat cells grow larger, but dont increase in number. When you lose weight, the fat cells shrink in size. Your genes determine how many and where fat cells are distributed, and some people tend to have more fat cells in some body areas than others. For example, some women have more fat cells in their thighs and hips, instead of a uniform fat distribution. Liposuction, in effect, sculpts fat cells from such areas, permanently removing them. But, the fat cells that remain in the area treated still can grow larger if weight is gained. Many liposuction patients often find that newly added weight will not accumulate in the specific areas as it did before, and instead distributes more evenly.

Introduction Ive spent the last 21 years studying, practicing, teaching and evolving as a Naturopathic Physician. Two themes have been consistent: natural medicine and the health care of women. The roots of naturopathic medicine are seen in the healing traditions of Egypt, India, China, Greece, Germany, South and Central America, Africa, and native North Americans. The European hydrotherapy tradition had a strong influence on the development of naturopathy, and by the end of the 19th century, Benedict Lust, a physician trained in the water-cure methods of Europe, came to America and began using the term naturopathy to describe an eclectic combination of natural healing principles and methods.

Collagen protein (hydrolyzed), created and patented by an American pharmacist in the early 1970s, has been used by doctors, clinics and hospitals for weight loss; various skin conditions, including treatment for burn victims; nutritional support for the elderly and hospital patients; wound healing; and for the support of joints and connective tissue. While some retailers–like Zayre, Hills and Jamesway–promote these products in BTS circulars, all merchants surveyed will try to cash in on the seasons influx of school-age customers with special in-store promotions. Last fall, when Zayre didnt advertise skin-care items at all, but simply “went after the business with increased inventory,” according to an official, sales jumped 20%–equaling the overall department gain.

Cappuccino coffee is named after the Capuchin friar: the frothy white milk was thought to look like a friars cowl.
Coffee houses have been regarded as cultural meeting places since the 17th century in western civilization when artists writers and political activists first started to meet and discuss topics of social interest over a cup of this stimulating drink. The poet Baudelaire in Paris in the 1840s described coffee as best served “black as night hot as hell and sweet as love.” Coffee seems always to have been part of the American landscape as it was a common feature on the chuckwagons of the prairie pioneers and cattle ranchers and in the break-rooms of companies and board rooms. Coffee is so popular in diners and roadside eateries that it is served almost as often as water. But for most of its history coffee was just coffee a commodity that was not associated with brand name or image. All that changed beginning in the 1980s as the result of a convergence of two trends. Americans looking for a socially-acceptable alternative to drug and alcohol intake were well-served by a proliferation of retailers eager to provide high-priced “gourmet” coffee to discriminating drinkers. Specialty shops such as Starbucks in Seattle and Peets Coffee in Berkeley have expanded to national chains whose popularity has eclipsed that of national brands such as Maxwell House and Folgers which spread across America in the fifties. In addition hundreds of independent cafeacute;s and coffee houses were founded in every major American city throughout the 1990s. In the Pacific Northwest–the capital of coffee consumption in America–drive-up espresso shacks line the roadsides providing a variety of coffee drinks to commuters willing to pay $3.50 for a 20-ounce Cafeacute; Mocha with a double shot of espresso. Even a small town like Snohomish Washington with a population of only 8000 boasts a dozen espresso shacks.

Divorce doesnt have to be as antagonistic and expensive as it often is or take as long as it usually does, say some area divorce lawyers who are offering an alternative way to end a marriage. In the “collaborative-law” process, both husband and wife meet together with their lawyers to reach a settlement, which is then brought before a court for final approval. Lawyers, who have settled divorces using this method, say the process is shorter compared with traditional divorce litigation, and, therefore, less costly.
Lawyers who handle collaborative divorce cases are passionate about the method. They tout it as a kinder, gentler way to do divorce, a process that saves clients money and reduces the hostility between the soon- to-be exes. Cappuccino coffee is named after the Capuchin friar: the frothy white milk was thought to look like a friars cowl.
ONCE THOUGHT TO BE THE DEVILS BREW COFFEE IS A GOD-SEND FOR ENTREPRENEURS FUELLING THE GLOBAL CAFFEINE OBSESSION You know that coffee is a big and profitable business when the drinks and snackfood giant, Coca-Cola Amatil, turns its attention to it. TWo years ago it bought Grinders Coffee, whose founder Giancarlo Gist is one of Australias coffee pioneers. But while coffee roasting may be a profitable business, the story of the humble café is very different.
CoffeeA driving force behind coffees global popularity is its caffeine content: a six-ounce (2.72 kilograms) cup of coffee contains 100 milligrams of caffeine, more than comparable amounts of tea (50 milligrams), cola (25 milligrams), or cocoa (15 milligrams). Caffeine, an alkaloid that occurs naturally in coffee, is a mild stimulant that produces a variety of physical effects. Because caffeine stimulates the cortex of the brain, people who ingest it experience enhanced concentration. Athletes are sometimes advised to drink coffee prior to competing, as caffeine renders skeletal muscles less susceptible to exhaustion and improves coordination. However, these benefits accrue only to those who consume small doses of the drug. Excessive amounts of caffeine produce a host of undesirable consequences, acting as a diuretic, stimulating gastric secretions, upsetting the stomach, contracting blood vessels in the brain (people who suffer from headaches are advised to cut their caffeine intake), and causing overacute sensation, irregular heartbeat, and trembling. On a more serious level, many researchers have sought to link caffeine to heart disease, benign breast cysts, pancreatic cancer, and birth defects. While such studies have proven inconclusive, health official nonetheless recommend that people limit their coffee intake to fewer than four cups daily or drink decaffeinated varieties.Coffee originated on the plateaus of central Ethiopia. By A.D. 1000, Ethiopian Arabs were collecting the fruit of the tree, which grew wild, and preparing a beverage from its beans. During the fifteenth century traders transplanted wild coffee trees from Africa to southern Arabia. The eastern Arabs, the first to cultivate coffee, soon adopted the Ethiopian Arabs practice of making a hot beverage from its ground, roasted beans.

Buying a home is often the largest purchase decision a person will make. It is therefore not surprising that the use of home inspectors is increasing as buyers seek to confirm the physical condition of their purchases. Home inspectors, however, have often been referred to as “deal killers” by real estate licensees because they have, on occasion, been responsible for stopping a sale of residential real estate that would have otherwise been completed. More recently, however, licensees are viewing home inspections somewhat differently. Instead of perceiving home inspectors as a potential source of reducing a real estate licensees income, licensees are viewing them as a way to increase future sales and reduce potential liability on the buyer side of the transaction. This study examines the role that home inspections play in the residential real estate home buying process. To date, no study has considered this impact on the sales process. Furthermore, the performance, process and other characteristics of those sales agents that have been involved with a home inspection in the residential sales process are unknown.

(This story was originally published in Lawyers Weekly USA, another Dolan Media publication). When parents with children divorce, their relationship is rarely over. The plan - which was distributed in September to 1,600 members - is intended to be a road map for navigating potentially bumpy child- rearing issues. It covers everything from where children will live and who theyll spend holidays with, to what after-school activities they can attend and what their summer schedules will be. The plan also asks parents to agree on their childrens religious upbringing and to confer with each other about non-emergency medical, dental and psychological treatments.

THE POPE has urged Roman Catholic lawyers and magistrates to refuse to handle divorce cases. He warned that divorce was “spreading like the plague” and lawyers should decline to use their profession for, “an end that is contrary to justice”. Pope John Paul II has in the past insisted that Catholic doctors not perform abortions or assist women with contraception. But this is the first time he has tried to tell the legal profession what to do. The reaction from politicians and advocates in Italy has been one of dismay at such open interference in civil issues.

LAS VEGAS — In multiple gestations, dont rely solely on the mothers perception of how the fetuses are positioned when monitorig fetal heart rates, Patricia M. Witcher, a registered nurse clinician, advised at a conference on fetal monitoring sponsored by Symposia Medicus. An ideal way to identify each fetus before heart rate monitoring would be to use ultrasound, but thats not realistic because most people who initiate monitoring dont do ultrasound, said Ms. Witcher, a nurse at North-side Hospital in Atlanta who specializes in labor and delivery and high-risk obstetrics. The best way to identify each fetus is by doing simultaneous monitoring and looking for divergence of fetal heart rate tracings. Thats really the only way we have of ensuring that we have a heart rate for each fetus, she said.

concrete slabs

ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed. The earliest manmade cement, called hydraulic lime, was developed in 1756, when an English engineer named John Smeaton needed a strong material to rebuild the Eddystone lighthouse off the coast of Devon. Although the Romans had used hydraulic cement, the formula was lost from the collapse of their empire in the fifth century A.D. until Smeaton reinvented it. During the early nineteenth century several other Englishmen contributed to the refinement of synthetic cement, most notably Joseph Aspdin and Isaac Charles Johnson. In 1824 Aspdin took out a patent on a synthetic blend of limestone and clay which he called Portland cement because it resembled limestone quarried on the English Isle of Portland. However, Aspdins product was not as strong as that produced in 1850 by Johnson, whose formula served as the basis of the Portland cement that is still widely used today. Concrete made with Portland cement is considered superior to that made with natural cement because it is stronger, more durable, and of more consistent quality. According to the American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM), Portland cement is made by mixing calcareous (consisting mostly of calcium carbonate) material such as limestone with silica-, alumina-, and iron oxide-containing materials. These substances are then burned until they fuse together, and the resulting admixture, or clinker, is ground to form Portland cement.
Concrete BlockConcrete mortar was used by the Romans as early as 200 B.C. to bind shaped stones together in the construction of buildings. During the reign of the Roman emperor Caligula, in 37-41 A.D. , small blocks of precast concrete were used as a construction material in the region around present-day Naples, Italy. Much of the concrete technology developed by the Romans was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. It was not until 1824 that the English stonemason Joseph Aspdin developed portland cement, which became one of the key components of modern concrete. The first hollow concrete block was designed in 1890 by Harmon S. Palmer in the United States. After 10 years of experimenting, Palmer patented the design in 1900. Palmers blocks were 8 in (20.3 cm) by 10 in (25.4 cm) by 30 in (76.2 cm), and they were so heavy they had to be lifted into place with a small crane. By 1905, an estimated 1,500 companies were manufacturing concrete blocks in the United States.
No retrospective would be complete without remembering the contributions of leading figures who have helped shape the industry. In this issue recognizing todays top contractors (see page 27), it is fitting to salute some of the pioneers from CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS early days. It was Corbettas dedication to the development of a strong concrete industry, however, that earned him the moniker Mr. Concrete. He was instrumental in founding several organizations, starting in 1950 with the Concrete Industry Board of New York City, which brought together concrete contractors, producers, architects, engineers, testing labs, cement manufacturers, and reinforcing steel producers.

Innovations generate efficiency and cut operating costs Although both descriptions ring true, another, more relevant theme will pervade the atmosphere this year, and unite the disparate technologies being shown. Its oil and energy conservation. As prices for oil and other sources of energy continue to soar, most manufacturers are looking for ways to control these costs. This pavilion just might have the shows highest concentration of exhibitors that have technology available to soften the blow of higher oil and energy prices. If you want an example of how various kinds of machine components can contribute to energy conservation, look in the booth that will be occupied by Baldor Electric Co. (Fort Smith, AR). This exhibitor will be introducing new AC permanent-magnet motors that are much more efficient than conventional designs.

RECRUITINGAssessing future personnel needs involves taking a close look at the companys expected workload, the capabilities of the current work force, the anticipated turnover, and the available labor supply. How the company stands in relation to these factors will help management to forecast future employment needs and develop a strategy to meet them. When a need has been identified, the next step is to perform a job analysis to collect information on all the tasks involved in the position and the types of skills, knowledge, and abilities required to do them. The job analysis leads directly to a job description, which defines all the duties and responsibilities of the position to be filled. Finally, the small business owner can use the job description to prepare a job specificationa written description of the person needed to fill the position. The job specification is the basis for recruiting, as it provides the standard against which applicants can be measured.Next comes the actual search for candidates. In his book Hiring Winners, Richard J. Pinsker recommends that companies begin the search process as early as possible in order to generate a long list of candidates from which to choose. Even in the early stages of the hiring process, it is vital to consider the legal environment. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Employment Act of 1972 forbid discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, veteran status, or religion. Therefore, it is illegal for recruiters to inquire about an applicants age, marital status, children, nationality, or church, and employers must be careful to avoid any mention of such issues in employment ads. It is also illegal to require candidates to submit a picture along with their applications.
As talented executives become savvier about managing their career paths, companies must offer more than money to attract them. We survey the ever-shifting executive recruiting trends. The good news for organisations that have focused on building good employment brands is simply that - it works. The best candidates are being drawn to enterprises that have signalled their commitment to providing a people-centred environment. In a recruitment market that is still largely candidate driven, job seekers are increasingly after challenge, career development options, flexibility and work/life balance.

A sweet flying delta wing Theres something eye-catching about a “delta-wing” type of aircraft. The mystique of an airplane with no fuselage or empennage piques our curiosity and challenges our instincts concerning aerodynamics. The Laser Models Laser Arrow delta wing is one in a new line of models distributed by Great Planes, and I quickly accepted the offer to review it. The kit consists of several sheets of laser-cut balsa and light plywood. To minimize damage, the wood sheets are secured to the bottom of the box with cardboard tabs. The hardware package is complete and includes pinned hinges, screws, devises, control horns, a fuel tank and other assorted parts. There is also a Nyrod (for throttle) and threaded-wire pushrods. The Laser-Lock building technique is very interesting; no plan is provided, nor is one needed. Instead, the building process relies on accurately laser-cut parts and interlocking tab-and-slot construction to ensure proper alignment.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Businesses continue to place a high priority on protecting their infrastructures from cyber-attack, according to analyst group Canalys, with the latest spending patterns showing corporate security budgets up by a third in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Spending on security in EMEA during the second quarter of 2004 totalled [pounds sterling]273.7 million - an increase of almost [pounds sterling]70 million over the same period a year ago. The report states that spending on enterprise security hardware devices in EMEA rose 53% year-on-year, while software sales grew 17% over the same period.
Increasing concerns over homeland security issues have put ever-higher levels of pressure on state governments that are often too beleaguered and too cash-strapped to have any hope of keeping up with security suggestions and initiatives from the feds. “New Hampshire is unique compared to a lot of states. There is a lot of security and high-tech expertise, particularly in Nashua, Manchester and Portsmouth,” Steinberg notes. “In addition, were a small state where people and companies are closely connected. Its the small boat versus the ocean liner theory. Were small enough to move quickly and take on a wide range of security issues, from power systems to healthcare records, throughout the state. We could become one of the examples that other, larger states look to when they are doing their own security initiatives.” Steinberg knew it would take an organized group effort to address the security needs of the state, as well as the help and backing of a major organization, as technology security and cybersecurity werent his only concerns. An effort to improve statewide security and meet homeland security needs will require coordination of security guard providers and perimeter fence manufacturers, too, among many others, he stresses.

Tighten thighs and buttocks by standing with you chair in front of you. Hold back of the chair, keep feet hip distance apart and ensure your hips and shoulders are above one another. Lower your bum as if sitting. Hold for five seconds and squeeze the buttocks. Repeat 15 times. Using a stable chair, place your hands next to your hips at the edge (fingers facing forwards) and move hips to the edge of the chair. Bend elbows back (not to side), lowering your body until the line of your hips and knees is at 90 degrees to the chair. Repeat ten times Try push-ups, sitting in your chair twisting from the waist. Incorporate weights by using water bottles to do biceps curls and straight arm lifts.
This is an exercise to help “get in touch” with the neutral spine. Lie on your back, bend the knees and place the feet flat on the floor about six inches in front of the sitting bones. Place the arms by your sides, palms down. Without tilting the pubic bone and tailbone up, try to press the length of the back into the flat surface. At the same time, contract the abdominal muscles down towards the spine. Feel as though you are pulling the belly button inwards. Do these last movements while exhaling through the mouth, with a “haaah” or a “ssshhhh” sound to help access the abdominal muscles. Feel the lower ribs pressing down and spreading. When you exhale, dont let the back lift or arch. Once you feel the muscles you are trying to isolate, any abdominal work done will be more effective.

Cancer PO Box 189, Gabriola Island, BC, Canada, V0R 1X0
CancerCancer is, in general, more common in industrialized nations, but there has been a growth in cancer rates in developing countries, particularly as these nations adopt the diet and lifestyle habits of industrialized countries. Over one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Anyone can get cancer at any age; however, about 80 percent of all cancers occur in people over the age of fifty-five.Cancer can affect any site in the body. About one hundred human cancers are recognized. The four most common cancers in the United States are: lung, colon/rectum, breast, and prostate . Together, these cancers account for over 50 percent of total cancer cases in the United States each year.
Thousands of cancer sufferers are being denied life-saving drugs because of delays and bureaucracy in making them available on the NHS. The hold-ups are a matter of life and death for desperate people who have been diagnosed with cancer of the breast, colon or lung, or with a brain tumour. Doctors are furious that drugs such as Avastin, which is used to treat colon cancer, and Ce-tuximab, a treatment for head and neck cancers, are being blocked by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice), a government-appointed quango set up to decide which drugs should be routinely prescribed on the NHS.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet!
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.
